Antimicrobial Stewardship in Tuberculosis: Key Insights from the 18th UNITE4TB Webinar
On 15 June 2026, UNITE4TB held a webinar entitled “Antimicrobial Stewardship in Tuberculosis”, bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss the critical role of stewardship in safeguarding tuberculosis (TB) treatment effectiveness. The webinar highlighted that drug-resistant TB remains an important challenge for global TB control, underscoring the urgent need to preserve the effectiveness of existing and future treatment regimens.
Dr. Thomas Theo Brehm (Borstel, Germany) presented, followed by a debate chaired by Prof. Dr. Raquel Duarte (ISPUP) and Prof. Christoph Lange (Borstel, Germany), together with two members of the UNITE4TB Young Investigator Group: Dr Dimitar Petrov (Ruse, Bulgaria), Dr Farihah Malik (Lahore, Pakistan).
Participants explored encouraging developments in the TB field, including the emergence of new drugs, shorter treatment regimens and improved diagnostic tools. However, it was noted, that the success of these innovations will depend on strong antimicrobial stewardship practices, equitable access to care, and effective implementation across diverse healthcare settings. A key message throughout the discussion was that stewardship is a shared responsibility. Patients, healthcare workers, researchers, policymakers, funders and industry partners all have an essential role to play in protecting treatment options and preventing the further spread of drug-resistant TB. Through collaboration and coordinated action, the global community can strengthen TB care and move closer to ending the TB epidemic.
Protecting TB treatments requires collective action. Stewardship, innovation, and equitable access must go hand in hand to help end tuberculosis.
